More thoughts about the Palestinian elections
January 27th, 2006 . by ImshinAs the hysteria continues, I can’t help thinking ‘What do we want from the Palestinians?’ They did what was right for them. I probably would have voted for the Hamas too, if I were in their shoes. The corrupt, thieving Fatah had it coming.
How long were people expected to tolerate such chaos, such anarchy?
Let us not forget that the Fatah would have stood up to Hamas and destroyed it long ago, had they been serious about peace with Israel. This way, Hamas did their dirty work for them. And now they are paying the price.
For while the Fatah was busy lining the private pockets of its people with the billions donated by the EU and other do-gooders, Hamas was doing more than sending suicide bombers to blow up in Israeli shopping malls. It was busy doing what Fatah should have been doing with the stolen money – looking after the people.
When you think about it logically, the Hamas were the only real alternative on offer. Not only do they take care of welfare and schooling for the poor, and ‘the poor’ is most of the Palestinians, they offer the Palestinians a clear agenda. And, sadly enough, national pride.
‘What do we want from the Palestinians?’ I know what we want for the Palestinians – for them to have free and democratic elections, but only if they vote for who we want them to. What hypocrisy. Why the hell should they? They don’t live foreign policy. They want to be able to live normal lives. As far as they are concerned, they made the only logical decision.
All we can do now is hope the Hamas, as a ruling party, becomes more moderate, more pragmatic. At least we know for sure that any deal we cut with them is only temporary. This was true for the Fatah too, but they lied through their teeth about it.
